Opportunities to Volunteer

Our School Community welcomes and solicits your help as parent volunteers. Parent volunteers make Castle Heights the great school it is.

There are so many ways you can assist. We need your help with our “Kiss and Drop” gate, providing security support in the morning, participating in special events or assisting in classroom activities.

Most of our volunteers are coordinated through the various parent groups that serve Castle Heights:

You may also contact Jenny Jones, our community representative, in the school office, at (310) 839-4528.

Volunteers who work regularly with the children must complete a district form and provide a recent TB test.

Volunteers must also sign in at the main office when coming on campus during the instructional day. You will receive a special “Volunteer Badge” that will identify you as a volunteer.

Koreh L.A.

We wanted to let you know about a fabulous program called KOREH L.A., which we can use to train our parent volunteers to offer reading support to our students.

KOREH L.A. is the non-sectarian volunteer literacy program created by the Jewish Federation's Jewish Community Relations Committee. "KOREH" is the Hebrew word for "read." Volunteers spend one hour, once a week, reading with a pre-school or elementary school child.

In just over six years, they have trained over 3500 volunteers, serving more than 75 Los Angeles elementary and pre-schools. Principals, teachers, and volunteers express the real impact that KOREH L.A. volunteers have on the reading abilities, attendance, classroom participation, and self-esteem of the children. Volunteers receive orientation and training and participate in periodic events with other volunteers in order to share experiences and celebrate the work they have done.

To learn more, you can check out the website, www.korehla.org

For the past five years at Castle Heights, we've used about 20 community KOREH L.A. volunteers to meet one-on-one with students who need extra help in reading. However, we have more students who could use this help than we have volunteers. It's time to tap into our parents to build the pool of KOREH volunteers.

To become a KOREH volunteer, you need to complete a 3-hour training. Then, Jenny Jones, CHES's Community Representative, can pair you with a student who needs your help. You would meet with your student for about an hour, once per week, during the school day.

There's a lot of flexibility in terms of days and times. KOREH trainings are offered regularly at various locations.

If you are interested in becoming a KOREH volunteer and helping our Castle Heights students improve their reading skills, please contact Jenny at 310-839-4528 or crb2538@lausd.k12.ca.us and let her know.

Thank you!
